Best  Quotes from Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez Love Quotes Edith Grossman (Translator)

“It was as if they had leaped over the arduous calvary of conjugal life and gone straight to the heart of love. They were together in silence like an old married couple wary of life, beyond the pitfalls of passion, beyond the brutal mockery of hope and the phantoms of disillusion: beyond love. For they had lived together long enough to know that love always loved, anytime and anyplace, but it was more solid the closer it came to death.”
― Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Love in the Time of Cholera

“and the two of them loved each other for a long time in silence without making love again.”
― Gabriel García Márquez, Love in the Time of Cholera

Our inner lives are eternal, which is to say that our spirits remain as youthful and vigorous as when we were in full bloom. Think of love as a state of grace, not the means to anything, but the alpha and omega. An end in itself.”

Life would still present them with other moral trials, of course, but that no longer mattered: they were on the other shore.”

Knopf published an English translation in 1988, and an English-language movie adaptation was released in 2007.

The main characters of the novel are Florentino Ariza and Fermina Daza. Florentino and Fermina fall in love in their youth. A secret relationship blossoms between the two with the help of Fermina’s Aunt Escolástica. They exchange several love letters. However, once Fermina’s father, Lorenzo Daza, finds out about the two, he forces his daughter to stop seeing Florentino immediately. When she refuses, he and his daughter move in with his deceased wife’s family in another city. Regardless of the distance, Fermina and Florentino continue to communicate via telegraph. However, upon her return, Fermina realizes that her relationship with Florentino was nothing but a dream since they are practically strangers; she breaks off her engagement to Florentino and returns all his letters.

The Notebook (2004) Movie Love Quotes

Young Noah: We’re back to that? Are we back there? What about the past couple of days? They happened, you know.
Young Allie: I know that they happened, and they were wonderful. But they were also very irresponsible. I have a fiancé waiting for me at a hotel who’s going to be crushed when he finds out what I did.
Young Noah: So you make love to me, and go back to your husband. Was that your plan? Was that a test I didn’t pass?
Young Allie: No, I made a promise to a man. He gave me a ring and I gave him my word.
Young Noah: And your word is shot to hell now, don’t ya think?
Young Allie: I don’t know. I’ll find out when I talk to him.

Young Noah: So it’s not gonna be easy. It’s going to be really hard; we’re gonna have to work at this everyday, but I want to do that because I want you. I want all of you, forever, everyday. You and me… everyday.

Noah: I am nothing special; just a common man with common thoughts, and I’ve led a common life. There are no monuments dedicated to me and my name will soon be forgotten. But in one respect I have succeeded as gloriously as anyone who’s ever lived: I’ve loved another with all my heart and soul; and to me, this has always been enough.

Young Noah: My Dearest Allie. I couldn’t sleep last night because I know that it’s over between us. I’m not bitter anymore, because I know that what we had was real. And if in some distant place in the future we see each other in our new lives, I’ll smile at you with joy and remember how we spent the summer beneath the trees, learning from each other and growing in love. The best love is the kind that awakens the soul and makes us reach for more, that plants a fire in our hearts and brings peace to our minds, and that’s what you’ve given me. That’s what I hope to give to you forever. I love you. I’ll be seeing you. Noah

Young Allie: Why didn’t you write to me? Why? It wasn’t over for me, I waited for you for seven years. But now it’s too late.
Young Noah: I wrote you 365 letters. I wrote you every day for a year.
Young Allie: You wrote to me?
Young Noah: Yes… it wasn’t over, it still isn’t over
[kisses Allie]

Allie: Do you think our love, can take us away together?
Duke: I think our love can do anything we want it to.
Allie: I love you.
Duke: I love you, Allie.
Allie: Good night.
Duke: Good night. I’ll be seeing you.

Duke: That’s my sweetheart in there. Wherever she is, that’s where my home is.

Young Allie: Now, say you’re a bird.
Young Noah: If you’re a bird, I’m a bird.

Noah: Summer romances begin for all kinds of reasons, but when all is said and done, they have one thing in common. They’re shooting stars, a spectacular moment of light in the heavens, fleeting glimpse of eternity, and in a flash, they’re gone.

Young Noah: It’s not about following your heart and it’s not about keeping your promises. It’s about security.
Young Allie: What’s that supposed to mean?
Young Noah: [yelling] Money. He’s got a lot of money!
Young Allie: You smug bastard. I hate you for saying that.
Young Noah: You’re bored Allie. You’re bored and you know it. You wouldn’t be here if there wasn’t something missing.
Young Allie: You arrogant son of a bitch.
Young Noah: Would you just stay with me?
Young Allie: Stay with you? What for? Look at us, we’re already fightin’
Young Noah: Well that’s what we do, we fight… You tell me when I am being an arrogant son of a bitch and I tell you when you are a pain in the ass. Which you are, 99% of the time. I’m not afraid to hurt your feelings. You have like a 2 second rebound rate, then you’re back doing the next pain-in-the-ass thing.
Young Allie: So what?
Young Noah: So it’s not gonna be easy. It’s gonna be really hard. We’re gonna have to work at this every day, but I want to do that because I want you. I want all of you, for ever, you and me, every day. Will you do something for me, please? Just picture your life for me? 30 years from now, 40 years from now? What’s it look like? If it’s with him, go. Go! I lost you once, I think I can do it again. If I thought that’s what you really wanted. But don’t you take the easy way out.
Young Allie: What easy way? There is no easy way, no matter what I do, somebody gets hurt.
Young Noah: Would you stop thinking about what everyone wants? Stop thinking about what I want, what he wants, what your parents want. What do YOU want? What do you WANT?
Young Allie: It’s not that simple.
Young Noah: What… do… you… want? Whaddaya want?
Young Allie: I have to go now.

Duke: How’s it hangin’ Harry?
Harry: I keep trying to die, but they won’t let me.
Duke: Well, you can’t have everything.

Young Noah: Get in the water.
Young Allie: No! I’m scared.
Young Noah: [yelling] Get in the water, woman! Get in the water!
Young Allie: [looks at him, puzzled]
Young Noah: [calmly] No I’m sorry baby, please just get in.
Young Allie: [hesitates]
Young Noah: [once his friends start yelling again] GET IN THE WATER!

Young Allie: [lying in the middle of the street] What happens if a car comes?
Young Noah: We die.

Allie: Do you think our love can make miracles?
Duke: I do.

Young Allie: It was real, wasn’t it? You and me. Such a long time ago, we were just a couple of kids. But we really loved each other, didn’t we?

Young Noah: We can just finish out the summer and see what happens then.
Young Allie: Please don’t do this, you don’t mean it. Oh why wait until the summer ends? Why don’t you do it right now?

[pushes Noah against car]
Young Allie: Huh? C’mon. Do it! Do it!
[repeatedly pushes Noah, starts hitting Noah, Noah starts hitting himself]
Young Allie: You know what? I’m gonna do it! It’s over. Okay? it’s over.
Young Noah: [opens his arms for a hug] Come here.
Young Allie: Don’t touch me! I hate you! I hate you!
Young Noah: OK, I’m going.
Young Allie: Why don’t you just go then?
[pushes Noah in the car]
Young Allie: Get out! Leave!

[kicks Noah’s car]

Young Allie: Go!… No, no, just wait a minute, we’re not really breaking up are we? Come on. This is just a fight we’re having and tomorrow will be like it never happend right?

[Noah drives away]

Young Allie: [after making love to Noah for the first time] You gotta be kiddin’ me. All this time, that’s what I’ve been missin’? Let’s do it again.
Martha Shaw: Look, a woman knows when a man looks into her eyes and sees someone else.

Young Noah: Now you know that I want to give you all the things that you want, right? But I can’t, because they’re gone… They’re broken.

Duke: Science only goes so far and then comes God.

Duke: They didn’t agree on much. In fact, they rarely agreed on anything. They fought all the time and they challenged each other every day…
Young Noah: [Allie and Noah are fighting] Don’t push me!
[Allie pushes Noah anyway]
Duke: …But in spite of their differences, they had one important thing in common, they were crazy about each other.

Duke: I was just going for a walk. I couldn’t sleep.
Nurse Esther: You were going to see Miss Allie. Now you know you’re not allowed. It’s against the rules. You go back to your room. And as for me, I’m going downstairs to get a cup of coffee and won’t be back for a while. Stay out of trouble.
[Duke walks over to Nurse Esther’s counter and sees a full cup of coffee]

Lon: [to Allie] The way I see it, I got three choices. One, I can shoot him. Two, I can kick the crap out of him. Or three, I leave you. Well, all that’s no good. You see, ’cause none of those options get me you.

Young Noah: [while hanging from the Ferris Wheel] Will you go out with me?
Young Allie: What? No.
Young Noah: No…?
Young Allie: No.
Young Noah: Why not?
Young Allie: I don’t know, because I don’t want to.
Young Noah: OK, then you leave me no other choice.
Young Allie: [Lets go with one hand] AHHHH!
Young Noah: I’m gonna ask you one more time, will you or will you not go out with me? I think my hand’s slipping.
Young Allie: OK, OK. Fine I’ll go out with you
Young Noah: No, don’t do me any favors.
Young Allie: No, no I want to.
Young Noah: Say it.
Young Allie: I wanna go out with you.
Young Noah: Say it again.
Young Allie: I WANNA GO OUT WITH YOU!
Young Noah: All right, all right we’ll go out.

Young Allie: Painting.
Young Noah: What?
Young Allie: You asked me, what I do for me…
Young Noah: What now?
Young Allie: I love to paint.
Young Noah: Really?
Young Allie: Mmm-hmm. Most of the time I have all these thoughts bouncin’ around in my head… but with a brush in my hand, the world just gets kinda quiet.

Young Noah: You don’t know me, but I know me.

Young Noah: [raising fists in air] Dad! God… I stammered!
Frank: Stammered, stuttered… what’s the difference. You couldn’t understand a damn thing he said.
[Allie laughing]
Frank: Anyway, I got him to read some poetry aloud and pretty soon his stuttering went away.
Young Allie: Well, that’s a good idea that poetry.

Duke: I am no one special. Just a common man with common thoughts. I’ve led a common life. There are no monuments dedicated to me and my name will soon be forgotten, but in one respect I’ve succeeded as gloriously as anyone who ever lived. I’ve loved another with all my heart and soul and for me, that has always been enough.

Young Noah: I see you got my letters, finally. What are you gonna do, Al?
Young Allie: I don’t know.

Frank: Say, how would you like some breakfast? Would you like some breakfast?
Young Allie: Breakfast?
Frank: Yeah!
Young Noah: Dad, it’s ten o’clock.
Frank: Well, what’s that got to do with it, you can have pancakes any damn time of night you want! Come on in, you want some breakfast?
Young Allie: Sure!

Young Noah: [humming] Bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum.
Young Allie: [laughing] You’re a terrible singer.
Young Noah: I know.
Young Allie: [laying her head on his shoulder] But I like this song.
[they continue dancing in the street to I’ll Be Seeing You]

Duke: She had come back into his life like a sudden flame; blazing and streaming into his heart. Noah stayed up all night contemplating the certain agony he knew would be his if he were to lose her twice.

Young Noah: I’m not usually like this, I’m sorry.
Young Allie: Oh yes you are.

Young Noah: I could be fun if you want. I could be pensive, uhh… smart, superstitious, brave? And I, uh, I can be light on my feet. I could be whatever you want. You just tell me what you want, and I’m gonna be that for you.
Young Allie: …You’re dumb.
Young Noah: I could be that.
Young Noah: Come on, one date, what’s it gonna hurt?
Young Allie: Mmm, I don’t think so.
Young Noah: Well what can I do to change your mind?

Duke: It was an improbable romance. He was a country boy. She was from the city. She had the world at her feet, while he didn’t have two dimes to rub together.

Young Noah: Stop thinking about what everyone wants, stop thinking about what I want, what your parents want! What do *you* want Allie?

Young Allie: When I’m with Noah I feel like one person and when I’m with you I feel like someone totally different.
Lon: Allie, it’s normal not to forget your first love but I want you for myself. I don’t want to convince my fiancée that she should be with me.
Young Allie: You don’t have to. I already know I should be with you.

Anne: She is out foolin’ around with that boy until two o’clock in the morning and it has got to stop! I didn’t spend seventeen years of my life raising a daughter and giving her EVERYTHING, so she could throw it away on a summer romance!
Young Allie: [Screaming] DADDY!
Anne: She will wind up with her heart broken or pregnant! Now he’s a nice boy, but he’s…
Young Allie: He’s WHAT? He is what? Tell me!
Anne: He is trash! Trash! Trash! Not for you!

Noah: He got the notion into his head that if he restored the old house where they had come that night, Allie would find a way to come back to him. Some called it a labor of love. Others called it something else. But in fact, Noah had gone a little mad.

Young Noah: I’m Noah Calhoun.
Young Allie: So?
Young Noah: So it’s really nice to meet you.
Edmond: Allie, who is this guy?
Young Allie: I don’t know, Noah Calhoun.

Young Noah: You’re gonna kill me woman! I need sleep, I need food, to regain my strength!

Nurse Esther: The doctor needs to see you.
Allie: Me? Now?
Nurse Esther: No, him.
Allie: But he hasn’t finished reading his story.
Noah: I’ll read some more when I’m through with the doctor. This shouldn’t take too long.
Allie: All right.
Noah: Don’t you go away. I’ll be right back.
Nurse Esther: While you waiting, maybe you’d like to play the piano for a few minutes. You do like that.
Allie: I do?
Nurse Esther: Mm-hmm.
Allie: I don’t know any tunes.
Nurse Esther: You can read music.
Allie: No kidding?
Nurse Esther: Mm-hmm.

Young Noah: What am I gonna do in New York?
Young Allie: …Be with me.

Young Noah: It’s not about keeping your promises, and it’s not about following your heart. It’s about security.

Young Allie: What do ya want?
[asks after he tells her he needs to regain his strength after making love all day]
Young Noah: Hmmm. I want some… uh… pancakes… and some bacon… and chicken.

Young Noah: When I see something I like, I gotta… I love it.

Young Noah: You wanna walk with me.
Fin: What are you guys doing? Get in!
Young Allie: Yeah.
Young Noah: We’re gonna walk.
Fin: Do you guys love each other?
[Young Noah snickers]
Fin: Oh I get it, you guys do love each other!
Young Noah: Okay. Goodbye.

Allie: They fell in love, didn’t they?
Duke: Yes, they did.

Allie: Did you write that?
Duke: No, that was Walt Whitman.
Allie: I think I knew him…
Duke: I think you did too.

Young Noah: [at the Carnival] Who’s that girl with Sara?
Fin: Her name is Allie Hamilton. She’s here for the summer with her family. Dad’s got more money than God.

Young Allie: [Noah is about to lie down in the street intersection] You’re gonna get hit.
Young Noah: [Looks around for oncoming cars, there aren’t any in sight] Uhh, by all the cars?

Anne: ‘Cause I might know you a little better than you think. And I don’t want you waking up one-morning thinking if you’d known everything you might have done something different.

Young Noah: If you’re a bird I’m a bird.

Young Noah: [to Martha] You know I want to give you everything you want. But I can’t. It’s broken.

Frank: Well, Mr. Calho… What am I? *Old* or something? You can call me Frank.

Young Noah: Unbelievable, Unbelievable.

Fin: [after Noah and Allie kept saying ‘You look great.’]
[to Allie]
Fin: You look great.
[to Noah]
Fin: You look great. And I know I look great.

Lon: Should I be worried?

Young Allie: This place is gigantic!
Young Noah: Yeah, a gigantic piece of crap!

Young Noah: You need to learn how to trust.

Young Allie: What’s going on?
Anne: We’re going home.
Young Allie: We’re leaving now?
Anne: Mm-hmm.
Young Allie: No, we’re not supposed to be leaving for another week.
Anne: Get dressed, come downstairs and have some breakfast. Willa will pack your things.
Willa: Why, I’d be happy to pack your things, Miss Allie.
Young Allie: No, I don’t want you to pack my things, I don’t want you to touch my stuff I’m not going!
Anne: Yes, you are.

Duke: Southern summers are indifferent to the trials of young love. Armed with warnings and doubts, Noah and Allie gave a remarkably convincing portrayal of a boy and a girl traveling down a very long road with no regard for the consequences.

Duke: Allie was surprised how quickly she fell in love with Lon Hammond. He was handsome, smart, funny, sophisticated, and charming. He also came from old Southern money and was fabulously wealthy.

Frank: [Allie painted Noah a picture] Now that’s a damn painting that is.

Frank: [Allie painted Noah a picture] Now that’s a damn picture there!

Nurse Selma: Excuse me. Come on, honey, let’s get you ready for bed

Five Feet Apart Book Quotes

Stella Grant likes to be in control—even though her totally out of control lungs have sent her in and out of the hospital most of her life. At this point, what Stella needs to control most is keeping herself away from anyone or anything that might pass along an infection and jeopardize the possibility of a lung transplant. Six feet apart. No exceptions.

The only thing Will Newman wants to be in control of is getting out of this hospital. He couldn’t care less about his treatments or a fancy new clinical drug trial. Soon, he’ll turn eighteen and then he’ll be able to unplug all these machines and actually go see the world, not just its hospitals.

Will’s exactly what Stella needs to stay away from. If he so much as breathes on Stella she could lose her spot on the transplant list. Either one of them could die. The only way to stay alive is to stay apart. But suddenly six feet doesn’t feel like safety. It feels like punishment.

What if they could steal back just a little bit of the space their broken lungs have stolen from them? Would five feet apart really be so dangerous if it stops their hearts from breaking too?

Romeo and Juliet Top 18 Romantic Quotes and Love Sayings

Romeo and Juliet Summary. Romeo and Juliet are set in Verona, Italy, where there is an ongoing feud between the Montague and Capulet families. The play opens with servants from both houses engaged in a street brawl that eventually draws in the family patriarchs and the city officials, including Prince Escalus
Shakespeare cleverly masks the true meaning of Romeo and Juliet behind the idea of a pair of ‘star crossed lovers’ controlled by fate and destiny. Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’ is all about the human condition. It is based around two star crossed lovers, whose affections are torn apart by their family’s feuds.

“it is my lady! *sighs* o, it is my love! o, that she knew she were! she speaks, yet she sais nothing. what of that? her eye discourses; i will answer it. i am too bold, ’tis not to me she speaks; two of the fairest stars in all the heaven, having some business, do entreat her eyes to twinkle in their spheres till they return.”

“Two households, both alike in dignity,
In fair Verona, where we lay our scene,
From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,
Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.
From forth the fatal loins of these two foes
A pair of star-cross’d lovers take their life;
Whole misadventured piteous overthrows
Do with their death bury their parents’ strife.
The fearful passage of their death-mark’d love,
And the continuance of their parents’ rage,
Which, but their children’s end, nought could remove,
Is now the two hours’ traffic of our stage;
The which if you with patient ears attend,
What here shall miss, our toil shall strive to mend.”
― William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet

That monthly changes in her circle orb,
Lest that thy love prove likewise variable.”

“Alas, that love, whose view is muffled still,
Should, without eyes, see pathways to his will!
Where shall we dine? O me! What fray was here?
Yet tell me not, for I have heard it all.
Here’s much to do with hate, but more with love.
Why, then, O brawling love! O loving hate!
O any thing, of nothing first create!
O heavy lightness! Serious vanity!
Mis-shapen chaos of well-seeming forms!
Feather of lead, bright smoke, cold fire, sick health!
Still-waking sleep, that is not what it is!
This love feels I, that feel no love in this.
Dost thou not laugh?”
― William Shakespeare, Romeo, and Juliet

Death lies on her like an untimely frost
Upon the sweetest flower of all the field.”

And breathed such life with kisses in my lips
That I revived and was an emperor.”

“It were a grief so brief to part with thee.
Farewell.”

“Can I go forward when my heart is here?”
― William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet

“Wilt thou be gone? it is not yet near day:
It was the nightingale and not the lark,
That pierced the fearful hollow of thine ear;
Nightly she sings on yon pomegranate tree:
Believe me, love, it was the nightingale.

Rom. It was the lark, the herald of the morn,
No nightingale: look, love, what envious streaks
Do lace the severing clouds in yonder east:
Night’s candles are burnt out, and jocund day
Stands tiptoe on the misty mountain tops:

I must be gone and live, or stay and die.

Jul. Yon light is not daylight, I know it, I:
It is some meteor that the sun exhales,
To be to thee this night a torch-bearer,
And light thee on thy way to Mantua:
Therefore stay yet; thou need’st not to be gone,

Rom. Let me be ta’en,, let me be put to death;
I am content, so thou wilt have it so.
I’ll say yon grey is not the morning’s eye,
‘T is but the pale reflex of Cynthia’s brow;

Nor that is not the lark, whose notes do beat
The vaulty heaven so high above our heads:
I have more care to stay than will to go:
Come, death, and welcome! Juliet wills it so,
How is’t my soul? let’s talk; it is not day.

Jul. It is, it is; hie hence, be gone, away!
It is the lark that sings so out of tune,
Straining harsh discords and unpleasing sharps.
Some say the lark makes sweet division;
This doth not so, for she divideth us:

Some say the lark and loathed toad change eyes;
O! now I would they had changed voices too,
Since arm from arm that voice doth us affray,
Hunting thee hence with hunts up to the day.
O! now be gone; more light and light it grows.

Rom. More light and light; more dark and dark our woes.”
― William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet

“I have a soul of lead
So stakes me to the ground I cannot move.”
― William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet

“I will make thee think thy swan a crow.”
― William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet

“Parting is such sweet sorrow”
― William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet

Nick Carraway: You can’t repeat the past.

Jay Gatsby: Can’t repeat the past?

Nick Carraway: No…

Jay Gatsby: Why, of course, you can… of course you can.

[last lines]

Nick Carraway: Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter – tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther… And one fine morning – So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.

[first lines]

Nick Carraway: In my younger and more vulnerable years, my father gave me some advice. “Always try to see the best in people,” he would say. As a consequence, I’m inclined to reserve all judgments. But even I have a limit.

Nick Carraway: Jay! They’re a rotten crowd. You’re worth the whole damn bunch put together.

Nick Carraway: [Voice-over] I was always glad I said that. It was the only compliment I ever paid him.

Jay Gatsby: I knew it was a great mistake for a man like me to fall in love…

Daisy Buchanan: I hope she’ll be a fool – that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool.

Jordan Baker: Well, I don’t care. He gives large parties, and I like large parties – they’re so intimate. Small parties, there isn’t any privacy.

Jay Gatsby: It’s so sad because it’s so hard to make her understand. It’s so hard to make her understand. I’ve gotten all these things for her. I’ve gotten all these things for her and now she just… she just wants to run away.

Daisy Buchanan: All the bright precious things fade so fast… and they don’t come back.

Nick Carraway: [narrating] They were careless people, Tom and Daisy. They smashed up things and people, and then retreated back into their money and their vast carelessness.

Jay Gatsby: My life, old sport, my life… my life has got to be like this.

[Raises finger to follow shooting star]

Jay Gatsby: It’s got to keep going up.

[repeated line]

Jay Gatsby: Old sport.

Nick Carraway: Reserving judgments is a matter of infinite hope.

Jay Gatsby: I knew that when I kissed this girl, I would be forever wed to her.

Nick Carraway: His Smile was one of those rare smiles that you may come across four or five times in life. It seems to understand you and believes in you just as you would love to be understood and believed in.

Daisy Buchanan: [after a long pause] Well, I’m certainly glad to see you again.

Jay Gatsby: I-I’m certainly glad to see you, as well.

Tom Buchanan: Daisy, can’t you see who this guy is, with his house and his parties and his fancy clothes? He is just a front for Wolfsheim, a gangster, to get his claws into respectable folk like Walter Chase.

Jay Gatsby: The only respectable thing about you, old sport, is your money. Your money, that’s it. Now I’ve just as much as you. That means we’re equal.

Tom Buchanan: Oh, no. No. We’re different. I am. They are.

[points to Daisy]

Tom Buchanan: She is. We’re all different from you. You see, we were born different. It’s in our blood. And nothing that you do or say or steal… or dream up can ever change that. A girl like Daisy…

Jay Gatsby: [Knocks contents off bar-top & grabs Tom with a raised fist] You shut up! Shut up! You shut up! Shut up! Shut up!

Nick Carraway: [Voice-over] Gatsby looked, at that moment, as if he had… killed a man.

Nick Carraway: I expected him to be…

Jordan Baker: Old and fat?

Nick Carraway: Yes. Young men just don’t drift coolly out of nowhere and buy a palace on Long Island.

Daisy Buchanan: Open another window.

Nick Carraway: There aren’t anymore.

Daisy Buchanan: Then telephone for an axe.

Nick Carraway: I just remembered, today’s my birthday.

Tom Buchanan: Happy birthday.

Nick Carraway: [narrating now] Thirty. The promise of a decade of loneliness. The formidable stroke of 30 died away as Gatsby and Daisy drove on through the cooling twilight – towards death.

Jay Gatsby: If there’s anything that you want, just ask for it, old sport.

Daisy Buchanan: I wish we could just run away.

Jay Gatsby: Run away? No. Daisy, darling, that… that wouldn’t be respectable. We’re gonna live here, in this house. You and me.

Daisy Buchanan: Gatsby? What Gatsby?

Jay Gatsby: I never realized how extraordinary a nice girl could be.

Nick Carraway: Stocks reached record peaks, and Wall Street boomed a steady golden roar. The parties were bigger, the shows were broader, the buildings were higher, the morals were looser, and the ban on alcohol had backfired. Making the liquor cheaper. Wall Street was luring the young and ambitious, and I was one of them.

Jay Gatsby: If it wasn’t for the mist, we could see the green light.

Daisy Buchanan: What green light?

Jay Gatsby: The one that burns all night at the end of your dock.

Nick Carraway: [narrating] Possibly, it had occurred to Gatsby that the colossal significance of that light had vanished forever. Now it was once again just a green light on a dock and his count of enchanted objects had diminished by one.

Jay Gatsby: [while recklessly driving his yellow car] Look here, Old Sport. What… What is your opinion of me, anyhow?

Nick Carraway: My opinion?

Jay Gatsby: Yes! Yes, your opinion. I don’t want you to get the wrong impression from all these… from all these bizarre accusations you must be hearing. A pack of lies, I guarantee you. You’ve heard all the stories?

Nick Carraway: Oh, well…

Jay Gatsby: I will tell you God’s truth. God’s truth about myself. I am the son of some very wealthy people from the Middle West. Sadly, all of them are dead now. I was brought up in America but educated at Oxford because all my ancestors have been educated there for many years. You see, it’s a family tradition.

Nick Carraway: [narrating] The way he spoke! No wonder people thought he was lying.

Tom Buchanan: I’d rather not be the polo player.

Daisy Buchanan: I’ve been everywhere and seen everything and done everything. I’ve had a very bad time, Nicky. I’m pretty cynical about everything.

Nick Carraway: Ah. Your daughter, I suppose she talks and eats and everything?

Daisy Buchanan: Pammy? Oh, yes. Listen, Nick, when she was born, Tom was God knows where… with God knows whom. And I asked the nurse if it was a boy or girl. And she said it was a girl and I wept, “I’m glad it’s a girl. And I hope she’ll be a fool. That’s the best thing a girl in this world can be. A beautiful little fool.” All the bright precious things fade so fast. And they don’t come back.

Nick Carraway: I remember how we had all come to Gatsby’s and guessed at this corruption while he stood before us concealing and incorruptible dream…

Daisy Buchanan: [dancing with Gatsby] All my life. I wish it could always be like this.

Jay Gatsby: It will be.

Nick Carraway: [narrating] If only if it’d been enough for Gatsby just to hold Daisy. But he had a grand vision for his life and Daisy’s part in it.

Tom Buchanan: Life is something you dominate, Nick! If you’re any good.

Jordan Baker: See, I didn’t realize until the other night that I’d met Gatsby. Five years ago. In Louisville. It was the day I got my new English golf shoes. Daisy was by far the most popular girl with the officers from Camp Taylor. One of them was in the car with her. It was Gatsby. And the way he looked at her is the way all girls want to be looked at.

Meyer Wolfsheim: What a gentleman. From one of the finest families in the Midwest. Ah, sadly, all dead now. When I first made the pleasure of Mr. Gatsby’s acquaintance, just after the war, I knew I’d discovered a man of fine breeding. A war hero! Such medals! And an Oxford man. You know Oxford?

Nick Carraway: Yes, I’ve heard of it.

Meyer Wolfsheim: Then you would know that when it comes to married women, a man like this can be trusted. With a friend, with someone like you, he’d never so much as look at your wife.

Nick Carraway: It’s a strange coincidence.

Jordan Baker: What is?

Nick Carraway: The fact that Gatsby’s house is just across the bay.

Jordan Baker: It’s no coincidence. He bought that house to be near her. He threw all those parties, hoping she’d wander in one night. He constantly asked about Daisy. I was just the first person that knew her.

Nick Carraway: All that for a girl he hasn’t seen in five years.

Nick Carraway: [to Catherine who was giving him some pills/drugs] Oh no. My nerves are fine, thanks.

Jay Gatsby: [Daisy cries after Gatsby showers her with fancy shirts] What is it? Daisy, Daisy darling, what is it?

Daisy Buchanan: It… it makes me sad.

Jay Gatsby: Why?

Daisy Buchanan: Because…

Nick Carraway: [narrating] Five lost years struggled on Daisy’s lips, but all she could manage was…

Jay Gatsby: Why?

Daisy Buchanan: [laughs] Because I’ve never seen such beautiful shirts before.

Daisy Buchanan: [Daisy narrating letter] We can’t lose each other. And let all this glorious love end in nothing. Come home. I’ll be here waiting and hoping for every long dream of you to come true.

Tom Buchanan: Civilization is going to pieces! Have you read “The Rise of the Colored Empires” by this fellow, Goddard? Everybody ought to read it. The idea is it’s up to us, the dominant race, to watch out or these

[points to black servant]

Tom Buchanan: other races will have control of things.

Daisy Buchanan: Tom’s very profound lately. He reads deep books with long words in them.

Tom Buchanan: It’s been proved. It’s scientific.

Daisy Buchanan: We’ve got to beat them down.

Jay Gatsby: You see, I thought you ought to know something about my life. I didn’t want you to think I was… Well, I didn’t want you to think I was just some nobody.

Jordan Baker: It all makes sense. It all makes sense!

Nick Carraway: What makes sense?

Jordan Baker: Everything! Oh, but here I am tantalizing you when I swore I wouldn’t tell.

Nick Carraway: Just tell me.

Jordan Baker: Oh, Nick. I’m sorry, I swore. I swore I wouldn’t tell.

Nick Carraway: The city seen from the Queensboro Bridge is always the city seen for the first time. In its first wild promise of all the mystery and the beauty in the world. Anything can happen, now that we have slid over this bridge, I thought. Anything at all. Even Gatsby could happen.

Nick Carraway: Gatsby’s real name was James Gatz. His parents were dirt-poor farmers from North Dakota, but he never accepted them as his parents at all. In his own imagination, he was a son of God, destined for future glory.

Tom Buchanan: You know, a lot of these newly rich people are just filthy bootleggers?

Daisy Buchanan: Not Gatsby. He’s a businessman. He owned a lot of drugstores.

Tom Buchanan: [scoffs] Businessman!

Policeman: Pull over! Pull over to the curb!

Jay Gatsby: All right, Old Sport. All right.

[shows him his business card]

Policeman: Right, you are! I’ll know you next time, Mr. Gatsby.

Meyer Wolfsheim: Lookin’ at my tiepin? Finest specimen of human molar.

Meyer Wolfsheim: [to Nick] I understand you’re looking for a business connection.

Jay Gatsby: No! No, no. No. No. No. No. This isn’t the man, Meyer. Remember, this is the *friend* that I told you about.

Meyer Wolfsheim: Oh! Oh, I beg your pardon. I had the wrong man!

“Confession is not betrayal. What you say or do doesn’t matter; only feelings matter. If they could make me stop loving you-that would be the real betrayal.”
― George Orwell, 1984

“We met less than a week ago and in that time I’ve done nothing but lie and cheat and betray you. I know. But if you give me a chance…all I want is to protect you. To be near you. For as long as I’m able.”
― Marissa Meyer, Scarlet

Toba Beta
“Betrayal is common for men with no conscience.”
― Toba Beta, My Ancestor Was an Ancient Astronaut

Charlotte Featherstone
“It hurts to breathe. It hurts to live. I hate her, yet I do not think I can exist without her.”
― Charlotte Featherstone, Addicted

Confucius
“It is more shameful to distrust our friends than to be deceived by them.”
― Confucius

John Fowles
“The human race is unimportant. It is the self that must not be betrayed.”

“I suppose one could say that Hitler didn’t betray his self.”

“You are right. He did not. But millions of Germans did betray their selves. That was the tragedy. Not that one man had the courage to be evil. But that millions had not the courage to be good.”
― John Fowles, The Magus

Elizabeth Eulberg
“It’s very easy to get a boy to leave the room.
It’s much harder to get him to leave your thoughts.”
― Elizabeth Eulberg, Prom & Prejudice

Kahlil Gibran
“Thus with my lips have I denounced you, while my heart, bleeding within me, called you tender names.

It was love lashed by its own self that spoke. It was pride half slain that fluttered in the dust. It was my hunger for your love that raged from the housetop, while my own love, kneeling in silence, prayed for your forgiveness.”
― Kahlil Gibran, The Forerunner: His Parables and Poems

Cassandra Clare
“When no one you know tells the truth, you learn to see under the surface.”
― Cassandra Clare, Lady Midnight

Whitney Otto
“No one fights dirtier or more brutally than blood; the only family knows it’s own weaknesses, the exact placement of the heart. The tragedy is that one can still live with the force of hatred, feel infuriated that once you are born to another, that kinship lasts through life and death, immutable, unchanging, no matter how great the misdeed or betrayal. Blood cannot be denied, and perhaps that’s why we fight tooth and claw, because we cannot—being only human—put asunder what God has joined together.”
― Whitney Otto, How to Make an American Quilt

“Touch. It is the touch that is the deadliest enemy of chastity, loyalty, monogamy, gentility with its codes and conventions and restraints. By touch, we are betrayed and betray others … an accidental brushing of shoulders or touching of hands … hands laid on shoulders in a gesture of comfort that lies like a thief, that takes, not gives, that wants, not offers, that awakes, not pacifies. When one flesh is waiting, there is electricity in the merest contact.”
― Wallace Stegner, Angle of Repose

Marissa Meyer
“Was it all in my head? A Lunar trick?”
Her stomach twisted. “No.” She shook her head, fervently. How to explain that she hadn’t had the gift before? That she couldn’t have used it against him? “I would never lie—”
The words faded. She had lied. Everything he knew about her had been a lie.
“I’m so sorry,” she finished, the words falling lamely in the open air.
Kai peeled his eyes away, finding some place of resignation off in the glistening garden. “You’re even more painful to look at than she is.”
― Marissa Meyer, Cinder

Agatha Christie
“Why shouldn’t I hate her? She did the worst thing to me that anyone can do to anyone else. Let them believe that they’re loved and wanted and then show them that it’s all a sham.”
― Agatha Christie, The Mirror Crack’d from Side to Side

G.G. Renee Hill
“She loved him. But he didn’t know how to love.

He could make love. But he couldn’t make promises.
She had desperately wanted his promises.
She wanted his heart, knew she couldn’t have it so she took what she could get.
Temporary bliss. Passionate highs and lows. Withdrawal and manipulation.
He only stayed long enough to take what he needed and keep moving.
If he stopped moving, he would self-destruct.
If he stopped wandering, he would have to face himself.
He chose to stay in the dark where he couldn’t see.
If he exposed himself and the sun came out, he’d see his shadow.
He was deathly afraid of his shadow.
She saw his shadow, loved it, understood it. Saw potential in it.
She thought her love would change him.
He pushed and he pulled, tested boundaries, thinking she would never leave.
He knew he was hurting her, but didn’t know how to share anything but pain.
He was only comfortable in chaos. Claiming souls before they could claim him.
Her love, her body, she had given to him and he’d taken with such feigned sincerity, absorbing every drop of her.
His dark heart concealed.
She’d let him enter her spirit and stroke her soul where everything is love and sensation and surrender.
Wide open, exposed to deception.
It had never occurred to her that this desire was not love.
It was blinding the way she wanted him.
She couldn’t see what was really happening, only what she wanted to happen.
She suspected that he would always seek to minimize the risk of being split open, his secrets revealed.
He valued his soul’s privacy far more than he valued the intimacy of sincere connection so he kept his distance at any and all costs.
Intimacy would lead to his undoing—in his mind, an irrational and indulgent mistake.
When she discovered his indiscretions, she threw love in his face and beat him with it.
Somewhere deep down, in her labyrinth, her intricacy, the darkest part of her soul, she relished the mayhem.
She felt a sense of privilege for having such passion in her life.
He stirred her core.
The place she dared not enter.
The place she could not stir for herself.
But something wasn’t right.
His eyes were cold and dark.
His energy, unaffected.
He laughed at her and her antics told her she was a mess.
Frantic, she looked for love hiding in his eyes, in his face, in his stance, and she found nothing but disdain.
And her heart stopped.”
― G.G. Renee Hill, The Beautiful Disruption

“A competitive and insecure woman will tell you that “true love” is never giving up on someone you’re in love with. A confident and spiritual woman knows that “moving on” doesn’t mean you never loved someone. She realizes that letting go is what God needs her to do because both your happiness and hers requires taking different journeys for spiritual growth. Letting go is sometimes the hardest thing, but it is the most “real love” you will ever experience.”
― Shannon L. Alder

Christine Feehan
“Betrayal is never easy to handle and there is no right way to accept it.”
― Christine Feehan, Dark Demon

Kahlil Gibran
“Only yesterday I was no different than them, yet I was saved. I am explaining to you the way of life of a people who say every sort of wicked thing about me because I sacrificed their friendship to gain my own soul. I left the dark paths of their duplicity and turned my eyes toward the light where there is salvation, truth, and justice. They have exiled me now from their society, yet I am content. Mankind only exiles the one whose large spirit rebels against injustice and tyranny. He who does not prefer exile to servility is not free in the true and necessary sense of freedom.”
― Kahlil Gibran

Blaise Pascal
“I lay it down as a fact that if all men knew what others say of them, there would not be four friends in the world.”
― Blaise Pascal

Terry Goodkind
“Only those you trust can betray you.”
― Terry Goodkind

“Disappointments in love, even betrayals, and losses, serve the soul at the very moment they seem in life to be tragedies. The soul is partly in time and partly in eternity. We might remember the part that resides in eternity when we feel despair over the part that is in life.”

“Betrayal is too kind a word to describe a situation in which a father says he loves his daughter but claims he must teach her about the horrors of the world in order to make her a stronger person; a situation in which he watches or participates in rituals that make her feel like she is going to die. She experiences pain that is so intense that she cannot think; her head spins so fast she can’t remember who she is or how she got there.

All she knows is pain. All she feels is desperation. She tries to cry out for help, but soon learns that no one will listen. No matter how loud she cries, she can’t stop or change what is happening. No matter what she does, the pain will not stop. Her father orders her to be tortured and tells her it is for her own good. He tells her that she needs the discipline, or that she has asked for it by her misbehavior. Betrayal is too simple a word to describe the overwhelming pain, the overwhelming loneliness and isolation this child experiences.

As if the abuse during the rituals were not enough, this child experiences similar abuse at home on a daily basis. When she tries to talk about her pain, she is told that she must be crazy. “Nothing bad has happened to you;’ her family tells her Each day she begins to feel more and more like she doesn’t know what is real. She stops trusting her own feelings because no one else acknowledges them or hears her agony. Soon the pain becomes too great. She learns not to feel at all. This strong, lonely, desperate child learns to give up the senses that make all people feel alive. She begins to feel dead.
She wishes she were dead. For her, there is no way out. She soon learns there is no hope.

As she grows older she gets stronger. She learns to do what she is told with the utmost compliance. She forgets everything she has ever wanted. The pain still lurks, but it’s easier to pretend it’s not there than to acknowledge the horrors she has buried in the deepest parts of her mind. Her relationships are overwhelmed by the power of her emotions. She reaches out for help, but never seems to find what she is looking for The pain gets worse. The loneliness sets in. When the feelings return, she is overcome with panic, pain, and desperation.

She is convinced she is going to die. Yet, when she looks around her she sees nothing that should make her feel so bad. Deep inside she knows something is very, very wrong, but she doesn’t remember anything. She thinks, “Maybe I am crazy.”

“Pride had kept her running when love had betrayed her.”
― Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Kiss an Angel

“BETRAYAL
No failure in Life, whether of love or money, is ever really that simple; it usually involves a type of a shadowy betrayal, buried in a secret, mass grave of shared hopes and dreams.

That universal mass grave exists in a private cemetery that most… both those suffering from the loss, but especially those committing the betrayal, refuse to acknowledge its existence.

When you realize you’ve been deeply betrayed, fear really hits you. That’s what you feel first. And then it’s anger and frustration. Then disappointment and disillusionment.

Part of the problem is how little we understand about the ultimate effects and consequences of betrayal on our hearts and spirits; and on trust and respect for our fellow brothers and sisters.

In writing, there are only really a few good stories to tell, and in the end, and betrayal and the failure of love is one of the most powerful stories to tell.

Tragedy in life normally comes with betrayal and compromise- by trading in our integrity and failing to treat life and others in our life, with respect and dignity. That’s really where the truest and the most tragic failures comes from… they come making the choice to betray another soul, and in turn, giving up a peice of your own.”

Bobby: Jack talked about how music is essentially twelve notes between any octave. Twelve notes and the octave repeats. It’s the same story told over and over, forever. All any artist can offer the world is how they see those twelve notes. That’s it. He loved how you see them.

Jack: Hey!

Ally: What?

Jack: I just wanted to take another look at you.

Jack: Could I ask you a personal question?

Ally: Okay?

Jack: Do you write songs or anything?

Ally: I don’t sing my own songs.

Jack: Why?

Ally: I just don’t feel comfortable.

Jack: Why wouldn’t you feel comfortable?

Ally: Because like almost every single person that I’ve come in contact with in the music industry has told me that my nose is too big and that I won’t make it.

Jack: That your nose is too big?

Ally: Yeah.

Jack: Your nose is beautiful. Are you showing me your nose right now?You don’t have to show it to me. I’ve been looking at it all night.

Ally: Oh, come on. No, you’re not.

Jack: Oh, I’m going to be thinking about your nose for a very long time.

Ally: You’re full of shit.

Jack: I’m not full of shit.

Ally: Yeah, you are.

Jack: I’m telling you the truth.

Ally: Yeah, you’re full of shit.

Jack: Look, talent comes everywhere. Everybody’s talented, fucking everyone in this bar is talented at one thing or another. But having something to say and a way to say it so that people listen to it, that’s a whole other bag. And unless you get out and you try to do it, you’ll never know. That’s just the truth. And there’s one reason we’re supposed to be here is to say something so people want to hear. Don’t you understand what I’m trying to tell you?

Ally: Yeah, I do. I don’t like it, but I understand it.

Jack: Oh, I think you like it a little bit.

George ‘Noodles’ Stone: You know it’s like, I dunno you… you float out… float out at sea then one day you find a port, say, ‘I’m gonna stay here a few days’. A few days becomes a few years. Then you forgot where you were going in the first place. Then you realize you don’t really give a shit about where you were going, cause you like where you at.

Jack: Can I touch your nose?

Ally: Oh, my gosh.

Jack: Let me just touch it for a second.

[He slides his finger down her nose]

Jack: You’re very lucky.

Ally: Oh, really?

Jack: M-hm.

Ally: Yeah, not really. My nose has not made me lucky.

Ally: I started writing this song the other day. Maybe that could work, like as a chorus or something.

[She gets up in front of Jackson and starts singing]

Ally: I’m off the deep end. Watch as I dive in. I never meet the ground. Crash through the surface, where they can’t hurt us. We’re far from the shallow now.

Jack: [singing] Maybe its time to let the old ways die.

Jack: Can I tell you a secret?

[Ally looks over to him]

Jack: I think you might be a songwriter. And don’t worry, I won’t tell anybody. But I’m not very good at keeping secrets.

Jack: If I don’t say this then I’ll never forgive myself.

Ally: What…

Jack: If you don’t dig deep into your fuckin’ soul you won’t have legs. I’m just telling you that. If you don’t tell the truth out there you’re fucked. All you got is you and what you have to say to people and they are listening right now and they are not going to be listening forever. Trust me. So you gotta grab it and you don’t apologize or worry about why they’re listening or how long they’re gonna be listening for. You just tell them what you want to say.

Ally: [singing] Tell me something, boy. Aren’t you tired trying to fill that void? Or do you need more? Ain’t it hard keeping it so hardcore?

Jack: Is that me?

Ally: That’s you.

Jack: Did you just write that now?

Ally: Yeah.

Jack: Pretty good.

George ‘Noodles’ Stone: You know, it’s like, I don’t know, you float out, float out at sea, and then one day you find a port, say, ‘I’m going to stay here a few days’. A few days becomes a few years. And then you forgot where you were going in the first place. And then you realize you don’t really give a shit about where you was going because you like where you’re at.

Jack: All you got to do is trust me. That’s all you got to do.

Bobby: If I was no good, why did you steal my fucking voice? Huh?

Jack: Cause you had nothing to fucking say.

Ally: You know, what I’d like is for my boyfriend to love me. Actually, for my husband to love me.

Jack: Yeah, who’s your fucking boyfriend? You got a boyfriend?

Ally: Yeah, I’ve got a boyfriend.

Jack: That hurts, calling me your fucking boyfriend.

Ally: You’re my boyfriend if you don’t treat me like your wife.

Ally: [sarcastically] Why don’t you have another drink? And we can just get fucking drunk until we fuckin’ disappear, okay? Hey! Do you got those pills in your pocket?

Jack: You’re just fuckin’ ugly, that’s all.

Ally: Hey, you got – I’m what?

Jack: You’re just fuckin’ ugly.

Ally: Get the fuck out! Get out! I said get out!

George ‘Noodles’ Stone: Maybe she’s a way out.

Cashier: [snaps a picture of Jack with her phone] I’m sorry. Had to.

Jack: It’s alright.

Ally: It’s not really alright, but…

Jack: Have a good one.

Bobby: All Dad ever did for you is make you his fucking drinking buddy.

Ally: I won’t do this again. I won’t come and find you. Next time you can clean up your own mess.

Jack: Thank you, by the way.

Ally: Thank you for what?

Jack: For giving me a home. This place never felt like home before.

[from trailer]

George ‘Noodles’ Stone: You know man, in the ol’ days, I always knew, like, you were going to do something, that you’d be alright. It’s the first time I’m worried about you.

Bobby: You think maybe he drinks a bit much? Sweetie, you have no idea.

Lorenzo: Actually, when I was in my 20s and 30s I was like a crooner. As a matter of fact, a lot of people thought I was better than Sinatra.

Rez Gavron: We have to change the color of your hair.

Ally: What’s wrong with my hair?

Rez Gavron: I’m thinking platinum…

Ally: I don’t want to be a fucking blonde.

Bobby: I think if we had a better band name we might have made it. Or maybe it was because we looked like a father-and-son duo.

Rez Gavron: We’re not exactly friends here. While you’ve been away we’ve been back here in serious triage trying to clean up your fucking mess. Barely finding our way through it. You almost single-handedly derailed her whole career, do you understand that? She’s never going to say this to you. She loves you too much.

Jack: [speaking to the crowd] There’s a friend of mine who came a long way to be here and she wrote a great song and I’d just like her to sing it. I think it’s pretty fucking good.

Rez Gavron: What you have right now goes way beyond just this. There are people who need to hear what you have to say musically. It’s not normal stuff. It’s really amazing what you’re doing. I think you have it all, I do. The question to you is, what do you want?

Jack: What do you want me to play?

Emerald: I don’t care. Just look at me while you do it.

Ramon: How you doin’, papo?

Jack: How am I doing? I’m doing all right if I can get a fucking drink.

Ally: Nobody ever asks you about you, huh?

Ramon: I could get used to this shit. You need to date more rock stars, baby girl, you know what I mean?

Rez Gavron: No drink?

Jack: No socks?
